Kyle van Leer

Kyle van Leer developed a love of theater as a founding member of the Trumbull Hall Troupe when he was in 8th grade. He performed in their first five shows — his favorite roles included the original Drag Queen Bee (Underland) and Slick Cheney (Fish Tale). During his time at Yale University, Kyle maintained a connection to theater through Yale Children’s Theater (YCT). During his four years at YCT, he participated in 9 shows, either acting, directing, writing, or producing. He also expanded the outreach and breadth of the program during his two years as its Artistic Director.

Since receiving his Ed.M. from Harvard, Kyle lives in Boston, MA with his fiancé and their pet fish, Sue Shi. Kyle works in Chelsea, MA as a 7th grade math teacher. He plans on establishing a musical theater program at his middle school, as a way to bring the joy of the stage to his school community. When In Rome is the first musical that he has co-written with his mother, and he is excited to use it as a way of getting children interested in ancient civilizations and their mythologies.
